A dog leaning in unfamiliar situation is like a young child clinging. Just prop her up and encourage her interest not her trepidation. Otherwise, when it's mutual affection (as with humans) leaning is A-OK!

My gut? Bring a whole lot in a box into the garage and explore it together before they actually step on it. Let them feel it, like it, hide biscuits in it for them to find. Then take them out and do a similar thing: one big gigantic adventure. I also have three (a new little pup added to the mix) and I will toss kibbles in the snow and the dogs will have a ball trying to find it! What a transition for you too! Good luck- send me a photo ;)

Hi there Sarah,
I found your comments welcoming, as I am rather concerned. We currently live in sunny South Africa where the sun shines most of the year and the coldest temperatures are about 10C. We are moving to Toronto where there is obviously a very different climate and plenty of snow. My dogs (2 Jack Russels, 1 Anatolian Shepard and 1 mixture) are my babies. How would I get them used to walking on / in snow. They are all adult dogs of which the Anatolian is the youngest of 2 years. If you can suggest anything, I would be most grateful. Many thanks, Linda

Depends how young and if she can hold it. With our new pup I carry her to the door, tap the bell with my finger then carry her down the stairs and place her in her spot.

If the puppy will be sleeping in a crate in our bedroom, should she "walk" outside or could she be carried to go potty until she is aware of which door leads to her "spot"?
